Nearly 200 volunteers combed the banks of the Brazos River for trash Saturday morning in a competitive cleanup hosted by Keep Waco Beautiful.
Families, individuals and representatives of local businesses braved the rain for the third annual “Trash, Dash and Bash” fundraiser.

Teams competed at Brazos Park East on kayak and foot for two hours to collect the most trash by weight.
Participants fanned out in every direction, while other volunteers stayed behind to weigh the scales. As the two-hour limit approached, volunteers filtered back with overflowing bags of foam cups, plates, beer cans, and bottles.

With weight the goal, teams got excited when they found the odd chainlink fence, tires and construction debris – heavy items that gave winners the edge.
Keep Waco Beautiful Executive Director, Carole Fergusson reported more than 1,300 pounds of trash collected over two hours. Due to the large turnout, organizers were still tallying individual team results Monday to see who won the competition.
