Midway Independent School District trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to close Speegleville Elementary School at the end of the school year to reduce the district’s cost.
“This was not a decision made lightly,” board President Susan Vick said. “We recognize the deep pride and history connected to Speegleville Elementary. Our responsibility is to make thoughtful, forward-looking decisions that support students and position the district for continued excellence in the future.”

Speegleville Elementary staff and families in the audience expressed sadness at the closure of a school that has served the community west of Lake Waco since 1954.
The decision came after a year-long discussion about closing the school due to high operational costs and an aging facility. Enrollment at the district’s oldest and smallest school has declined for six years to about 220.
Midway ISD Superintendent Chris Allen stated birth rates have been decreasing in the state and regionally since 2010. In addition, the school costs more per student to run due to the age of the facility.
Students currently attending Speegleville will be rezoned to South Bosque Elementary and Woodway Elementary.
Allen said the district will focus on transition plans. He plans to speak to Speegelville staff on Wednesday.
“Our priority is ensuring a smooth and supportive transition for students, staff, and families,” Allen said. “We will communicate clearly and consistently as next steps are finalized.”
Transition planning will include additional communication about attendance zones and transportation, staff reassignments, events to honor Speegleville’s legacy, and welcoming events for students, families, and staff transitioning to South Bosque and Woodway Elementary.
